Review–Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World #2) by Jeaniene Frost

Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares.

At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears - this fearless, beautiful....human who braved death to rescue him. Though her burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.

But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

My Review

For some inexplicable reason, I could never get the Mencheres character as I always envisioned him as being an older gentleman. Maybe it was in the way he acted or carried himself, because no matter how many times Jeaniene Frost described him, I couldn’t picture him anything but a senior citizen. Finally, I saw the light when I was shown the book trailer and I snapped back to reality – what the heck had I been drinking? *drools*

Not only is Mencheres drop dead gorgeous – he’s also got awesome powers that draw you into this book. Being born in 2553 B.C., Mencheres has had enough of his very long existence and he’s about to commit Suicide-By-Ghoul in an abandoned warehouse. In walks Kira, a private investigator who happens to walk by, hears him in agony, and stumbles into the action.

Kira tries to rescue Mencheres from his attackers, but ends up getting injured. Mencheres drops his suicide act and opts to save her as a way to repay her kindness in helping him out, even though he is a complete stranger. He quickly destroys the ghouls and takes Kira to his home to heal her.

Once Kira is healed, he aims to make her forget they ever met, but he’s intrigued as a week passes by and he’s not able to glamour her.

Little by little, Mencheres and Kira start to fall in love – just when Mencheres thought his life was over. Kira kickstarts Mencheres’ dead heart, and gives him a reason to live – just when his oldest of enemies, Radje, tries to take him down.

Everyone rallies together with Mencheres and helps him overcome Radje. Alliances are tested and new bonds are forged in this story. Several of the Night Huntress characters show up: Bones, Cat, and I just about screamed when he made his appearance – V L A D!!!

I can’t wait until Jeaniene Frost gives us the backstory and a whole book just on Vlad, he’s way too awesome! The way he interacts with Bones is so hilarious. They can’t resist insulting each other.

What I truly loved about this book was that Kira wasn’t just another girl in the background – waiting to be rescued by Mencheres, she actually took the reins and always tried to save him. I loved the power play between Kira and Mencheres and their sexy scenes were scorching hot!

This book is a definite Must-Read and I promise you won’t be disappointed with the surprise ending! Loved it!

excerpt

“I need your phone,” Mencheres said to Vlad.

He handed it over. Mencheres dialed Bones first, looking out the small window at the dark expanse of water far beneath them. The Gulf of Mexico. They were less than an hour away from Chichén Itzá.

“Tepesh,” Bones answered his phone, not bothering to say hello. “Do you know where Mencheres is?”

“I am here,” Mencheres replied calmly, even though he felt anything but calm.

“Bloody hell,” Bones breathed. “When I last spoke to you, I thought—”

“I thought so as well,” he interrupted with a hint of wryness. “But it appears I was not meant for that particular fate.” His darkness might still find him, but not in the form of being trapped as one of the Devourer’s akhs because he’d failed to complete the ritual.

“Where are you?”

“In a plane on my way to ChichĂ©n Itzá in the Yucatán Peninsula. That is where Radje has Kira. I need you to come here. If I am successful in freeing her, someone will still need to force one of her guards to confirm to Radje that all is well when I meet with him later.”

“You need him for that?” Vlad looked mildly affronted. “I’m twice as old and twice as capable.”

“Call Veritas and tell her where Kira is,” Mencheres continued, not addressing Vlad’s comment. He and Bones had always been at odds with each other, no doubt due to their similar natures. “Tell her to come but not to inform any other Guardians. I can’t risk word getting to Radje.”

“You’re still trying to keep me on the good side of the Guardians in case you don’t come back from this,” Bones said in rasping tones.

“Yes,” Mencheres replied shortly. “Our line must be protected, no matter what.”

“Grandsire, I . . .” Bones stopped, his voice breaking off.

Mencheres smiled slightly. Bones might call him grandsire because he’d made the vampire who later turned Bones, but Mencheres knew he wasn’t the only one who felt that their relationship was more father and son.

“It doesn’t need to be said. I know.”

Then he hung up, meeting Vlad’s sardonic copper green gaze.

“Why you and Cat care so much for that street peasant, I will never know.”

“Because we see deeper into him than you bother to look,” Mencheres replied. “You were worse at his age. I remember; I was there.”

“If you meant to send for Veritas and Bones, why didn’t you call them in time to arrive with us?” Vlad asked, switching the subject.

Mencheres looked out the window again. “Veritas will be more interested in securing proof against Radje than in saving Kira’s life. And now Bones and Cat will have the opportunity to mend fences with her by passing this on personally. Veritas is a valuable ally, but they have some history with her to overcome.”

“You’ll need to keep several guards alive. You don’t know which one of them Radje is supposed to call later.”

Mencheres gave him a measured look. “That’s why I needed more than just you here once I leave to meet Radje—because I can’t take Kira with me.”
