Review: Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye

Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

What I loved about Hearts in Darkness:
  • It’s the epitome of ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’.
  • Caden is not afraid to be vulnerable with McKenna on the elevator.  And he’s still incredibly masculine!  Go figure.
  • The description of McKenna’s crappy day is so true to life.
  • Caden’s nickname for McKenna.
  • That they secretly sniff each other.  I would do the same thing.
  • The confessions that come out when your in the dark, stuck on an elevator with a stranger.
  • It has great sexual tension.
  • Ladies - Caden has sexy tats!
  • The sex is perfectly descriptive.
  • They have fun with sex, even as hot as it is.
  • I think Caden has a little bit of Dom in him.
  • Finally, a book where two people communicate openly!
  • The pillow talk.
  • The line “Drawer.  Condom.  On you.  Now.”  *fans herself*
  • This is the perfect novella to read on a commuter train or lunch hour or if your in the middle of a 10 book series and need a break.  (or in the middle of two 10 book series, like me. Smile)

Definite recommended read.

At first, he thought he imagined it: her fingers, exerting pressure against the back of his neck. But she continued on with the steady stroking. He just wasn’t sure. He concentrated all his focus on the movement of her hand and…I didn’t imagine it that time, did I? There it was again—her fingertips pulling him toward her.
Please let me not be imagining that.

He licked his lips and moved his head forward just an inch or two. God he wanted to kiss her. His fingers itched to finally thread their way into all that red hair and his lips fell open in anticipation of claiming her mouth. He wanted to taste her. He wanted to feel her under him.

“Makenna,” he rasped.

“Yes, Caden, yes.”

It was all the confirmation he needed.

He pushed himself across the carpet until his chest encountered her side and he slowly bent his head down so he didn’t hurt her in his blind impatience. His mouth found a cheek first and he pressed his lips against the soft apple of it and she moaned and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders. His right hand landed in a pile of silky curls and the satisfaction he felt at finally touching her hair made him swallow hard.

“So soft,” he murmured, meaning her hair and her skin and the mound of her breast pressing against his chest where he was atop her.

Caden let out his own moan when her lips pressed against the skin in front of his ear. She exhaled roughly and the rush of her breath over his ear caused goose bumps to break out on his neck.

He trailed soft kisses across her cheek until he found her lips.

And then he couldn’t go slow anymore.

And neither could she.
