After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...
Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all--but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him - a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own.
When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.
My Review:
Once Burned (finally) tells Vlad’s story – a character featured in Jeaniene Frost’s (JF) Night Huntress Series Books. In this first installment of a series, Vlad has an age old enemy (Mihaly Szilagy) he believed was dead, threatening him and the people closest to him.
First on Szilagy’s list is Leila, Vlad’s lover, who has special powers any one – supernatural or not – would kill to have on their side. Through a freak accident in her childhood, Leila channels electrical currents and when touching objects, she can discern the past, present, and future from them.
But Vlad pulls out all the stops to keep her safe. He lives up to his name, taking no prisoners as he searches for Szilagy and his men before they find him. In classic JF style, Once Burned features a thrilling, non-stop action-packed ride, filled with hott sexxy scenes that will leave you hungry for more.
Personal Thoughts:
I absolutely loved this book! JF is one of my favorite authors and hands down my favorite character of hers is Vlad. I was so excited for the release of this book and JF did not disappoint bringing Vlad front and center for once.
But though the book was great there are two reasons I didn’t give Once Burned 5 Kisses.
1) Leila. The only reason I read this book was for Vlad and I was disappointed we never get to see his POV throughout the whole book. JF wasted too much time on Leila, when in actuality the only character we wanted to know more of was Vlad. I really hope the next book in this series features Vlad’s POV, or more of him, otherwise I don’t see much of a future for this series for us die hard Vlad fans.
2) Loins. Why, oh, why was this word used every time a sexxy scene came up? Was this an editing slip, or did JF ignore the memo to find another word? Well, whoever is responsible needs to be sent back to Words Never To Be Used During Sexxy Scenes 101 ASAP. I cringed every time this word came up.
Other than these two issues, Once Burned is a great read, and the sexxy scenes were everything I expected from Vlad. I hope it’s not too long of a wait for the next book. :)
The smart move would be to go back to bed and sleep on all the concerns I had about this relationship, but I went into the bathroom instead, flipping on the light. The glass doors encasing the shower concealed nothing from my gaze.
Vlad’s head was directly under the spray, dark brown hair appearing longer with the water sluicing through it. Red rivulets turned to pink and then ran clear as the blood that had soaked through his clothes washed away. From his taut nipples, the water was cold, but faint steam rose as it hit him. His body was even more tempting with that glistening wetness highlighting every ripple, hollow, and bulge. Long, thickly muscled legs set off the twin mounds of an ass that practically dared you not to stare at it. I did until he took a bar of soap and began rubbing lather over himself. White suds clung to sinewy arms, draped across broad shoulders, gathered in the hollow of a sculpted chest, slid down the enticing dark trail on his stomach, and then crowned in the crisp hair of his groin.
My gaze stayed there, and when he lathered flesh that grew and thickened under his hand, a distinct throb began in my loins. Vlad’s seething masculinity was matched only by his incredible power, and though both were way out of my league, I was drawn to him like the proverbial moth to a flame. Without thought, I slipped out of my robe and then my nightgown.
When I met his gaze, it was bright green and predatory, making a shiver run through me that had nothing to do with being naked in a chilly room. I’d never had someone stare at me the way he did. As if he already owned me body and soul, and I was the only one who hadn’t realized that yet. Moving like I was in a dream, I entered the shower, gasping when he pulled me to him. The water was icy, but his flesh was scalding, and the shock of burning and freezing at the same time was heightened by the intensity of his kiss. His mouth was molten bliss, tongue a sinuous brand; large hands igniting desire everywhere they roamed. My nails dug into the muscled expanse of his back, and he let out a low laugh at the current that jolted into him.
“I love how excitement sharpens your power.” Growled as his mouth trailed down to my neck. “When you’re about to come, your whole body vibrates. Most incredible thing I’ve ever felt.”
Then he sucked the spot he’d pierced three days ago. The punctures had healed, but shards of erotic sensation coalesced under his mouth as if reminding me how good his fangs felt buried there. I’d gripped his head and stood on tiptoe to press him closer before I realized what I’d done.
Another chuckle, more darkly possessive than amused. “I told you you’d crave my bite.” Then the graze of sharp teeth. “Is this what you want?”
It was, and between the taunting strokes of his fangs and his ruthlessly knowing hands, I could barely stay upright. Desire melted my bones to candle wax, and the wetness between my legs was from more than the shower spray, but the sensual triumph in his tone stirred something primal in me. Yes, he’d made me crave his bite, his kiss, and other things I could never have from him, but I refused to be the only one drowning in need.
I sank to my knees, grasping his hardened flesh with my left hand. I’d never done this before, but I’d seen it through the eyes of other people and it seemed basic enough. I closed my mouth over the tip of his shaft, running my tongue along heated flesh that was smoother than velvet, yet hard as marble. Something between a groan and a hiss sounded above me, and then his hand brushed my cheek.
“Don’t stop.”
The words were a command; his tone wasn’t. It resonated with the intensity of a plea, probably the closest I’d ever come to hearing Vlad say please. Inwardly, I smiled. Who had what the other person wanted now?
His laughter ended on a harsh note as I took him deeper, tasting the faint, not unpleasant tang of soap. My teeth pressed against him from his girth, tongue curving along that rigid flesh as I encased him until I had to stop despite there being more. The cold water made me shiver, but Vlad’s warm thighs pressed against my breasts, his scorching hands twisted in my hair, and my mouth was filled with his pulsing, hot length, making those parts of me deliciously burn. Always extremes with Vlad, but right now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Rating:
Gonna start her series soon as I finish the Karen Marie Moning's series.
ReplyDeleteYay! You'll love her! JF is an awesome author - love the Night Huntress series :)
ReplyDeleteAww, I was really hoping it would be from Vlad's POV! It is his book! And I agree about loins. That is a term used for the books set back in the 1800's. It can be a turn off. I'm glad to see you still really enjoyed it. He is probably my fave character in these books. (Well, at least tied with Bones)
ReplyDeleteI know, Red Headed Bookworm! I felt a bit cheated and like a victim of false advertising because we never got to see Vlad's POV and yet it was advertised as HIS book. *sad julie*
DeleteI just couldn't get on board with Leila at all. But I loved how yummy Vlad's described...yummmm imagine taking a shower with him and the steam coming off him *faints* love it! :)
I hope the next book has his POV *fingers crossed* :)
